Blackpool Illuminations have been described as the greatest free show on earth. Throughout autumn, Blackpool sea front is lit up with a spectacular display including hundreds of scenic designs and features and thousands of lights.

The illuminations extend for nearly six miles along the famous Promenade, and last for 66 consecutive nights from the beginning of September to early November, attracting over 3.5 million visitors to the resort annually. Although many other holiday resorts close down for the winter, the Blackpool tourist season continues throughout September and October, with the historic Golden Mile awash with light and colour. There are floodlights, spotlights, lasers, lightshows and brilliantly illuminated scenes, costing some two and a half million pounds. There are over a million light bulbs in different shapes, colours, and combinations creating scenes of people, events, historic and fictional characters and indeed anything that is capable of being depicted in the medium of light.

The lights are an essential part of British heritage and a trip to see them is one of the events of the year for the thousands of people who arrive by bus to tour through them. It can take a long time to get through the illuminations with queues of coaches and cars travelling bumper to bumper along the miles of promenade, inching along giving their passengers ample opportunity to admire the displays.

The annual switch on of “Blackpool Lights” is itself an eagerly anticipated event, and the ceremony has been performed by numerous celebrities – including Dr Who and even Red Rum! The identity of the celebrity who will switch on Blackpool illuminations is often not announced until near to the event itself, adding to the sense of occasion. To be invited to perform the switching on ceremony is regarded as a great honour. Many people see the lights by strolling along the promenade, but there are other interesting ways of seeing them. You can take a landau or illuminated tram along the promenade or enjoy a panoramic view from the top of the tower. On various nights during the illuminations there are fireworks championships involving competing displays presented by experts from different countries. There are often other events such as the parade of Honda Goldwings or floodlit Beach volleyball. The Blackpool tower laserbeam is the latest addition to the illuminations. New for 2007 this vividly patterned beam can be seen from 30 miles away.
